Head to the Steve Miklos Aquatic Center (also known as the Folsom Aquatic Center), a city-run waterpark with a waterslide, splash playground, inflatables course, lap pool, and even movie nights in the summer. Open to residents and visitors of Folsom during the area’s warmer months, the Folsom Aquatic Center is where everyone goes to cool down and beat the heat.

Visitors of all ages climb three stories, again and again, to slide down the thrilling 165-foot spiral water slider, which ends with a splash in the pool. Afterward, you can rest up in the shaded grassy lawns and designated picnic areas that surround the pool and feel at ease as professional, licensed lifeguards watch over everything. The Folsom History Museum focuses on exhibits about Folsom’s native people, the discovery of gold in California and the formation of mining camps, ethnic groups who contributed to this area, the formation of the town, railroad, prison, powerhouse, and later efforts at gold mining. It’s at the center of historic Sutter Street, surrounded by the old facades of buildings from years past.

Inside the museum, interpretive displays tell the region’s long history, spanning from the native Nisenan peoples to the 1960s. The main galleries are filled with photographs, antiques, and a few hands-on displays. The Folsom Powerhouse is part of a colorful chapter of Sacramento history and is also an example of the tremendous advance in the commercial application of electricity. The opening of the powerhouse brought with it a “grand electric carnival” parade through downtown Sacramento and a 100-gun salute from a detachment of soldiers near the substation.

Visitors touring the powerhouse can see the massive General Electric transformers, each capable of conducting from 800 to 11,000 volts of electricity, in addition to the forebays and canal system that brought the water from the dam. The museum features a wealth of photographs, old hemp ropes used to hang prisoners, memorabilia from Johnny Cash’s famed concert shows, a hand-cranked Gatling gun, and many more.

The Folsom Railroad Museum is located in a vintage railroad passenger car in Historic Folsom on the railroad block between two historic railroad depots, the Folsom Railroad Depot and the Ashland Freight Depot. The site also boasts a reconstruction of an ‘A’ frame or ‘gallows’ type ‘turntable’ used to turn locomotives, originally erected in 1867.

They maintain a growing collection of railroad artifacts, from date nails and lanterns to documents and maps.
