Johansen Farms, formally known as Low-Land-Gardens, originated in 1925 when Hans Johansen came to America from Copenhagen, Denmark to settle in Lisle, Illinois. Hans raised fresh vegetables and flowers in hot beds to sell at his roadside vegetable stand. Cort Johansen Sr., the second oldest of Hans’ four children, was born in 1929 and chose to follow in his father’s footsteps. He opened his first farm stand with his wife, Dorothy, in 1957.

Cort and Dorothy Johansen continued building their business throughout the years while raising a family of six children. By 1979, Cort and his family had established six roadside farm stands, when they added their Boughton Road location in Bolingbrook IL. This new vegetable and flower farm location, featuring an annual fall festival and children’s petting zoo, would soon come to be known as the pinnacle of excitement to kickoff the holiday season for suburban and Chicago residents. After the passing of Cort Johansen in 1990, his wife and four of their six children continued to carry on his ambitions and dreams for the future. We are to sad to say we lost our Mom, Dorothy, on October 4, 2017 at the age of 85. We will continue carrying on their dreams.

By the year 2000, changing with the times, the six roadside stands were eliminated and our Route 53 location in Bolingbrook, featuring a permanent greenhouse and garden center, was established. Since then, local residents have come to rely on us for the highest quality and selection in the Chicagoland area.

This year the Johansens are celebrating their 85th year in business. In keeping with Cort Sr.’s legacy, Johansen Farms continues to offer families a fall festival featuring the grandest of pumpkin displays, stunning mums in every fall shade and a petting zoo for children of all ages!
