As reflected by our mission statement below, the Moffett Field Historical Society is dedicated to education about and preservation of the heritage of one of Northern California’s most significant historic sites … Moffett Field. This section tells the Society’s story: our history, how you can contribute to helping us achieve our mission through membership and/or donations, keeping informed through our Sparrowhawk newsletter, and the services — Library, docent tours, speakers, and more — that we provide.
We recognize Moffett Field’s namesake, Rear Admiral William Moffett, who lost his life in the crash of the Macon’s sister ship, the dirigible Akron. In December 1915 Moffett received the Medal of Honor for his captaincy of the USS Chester in a daring and dangerous night landing in 1914 at Veracruz, Mexico. His Medal of Honor is on display at the museum for those interested in taking a look!
