In 1941, Travis Dickey opened the first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Dallas, Texas. Funds were so tight, he couldn’t afford his own sign– he had to rent space on either side of the Dickey’s sign to Dr. Pepper!
Dickey’s expanded throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area and became a staple in North Texas culture. It wasn’t until 1994, when Roland’s son, Roland Dickey, Jr. became President of the company, that Dickey’s expansion went nation-wide.
