The Maidu Museum & Historic Site offers visitors a unique combination of a world-class museum and a 6,000-year-old Californian Indian village site. Graced by oak trees and bordered on the south by the Strap Ravine, the nature area offers a loop trail that takes you past ancient petroglyphs and hundreds of bedrock mortars for grinding acorns; evidence of Nisenan / Southern Maidu occupation of the site for thousands of years.
Inside the museum, you’ll find exhibits portraying the Maidu way of life and an art gallery featuring the talents of contemporary Native Americans. The Carnegie Museum is housed in Roseville’s first permanent library. The building was constructed in 1912 with brick and terra cotta from Gladding McBean in nearby Lincoln and granite from Rocklin. Roseville labor built the structure on the land donated by Roseville businessman A. B. McRae.
The original cost of the building was $12,500.Like many others built during the early part of the century, this library was funded in part by Andrew Carnegie. The Women’s Improvement Club helped raise the remainder of the funds, and funds matched their efforts from the City of Roseville. It was Roseville’s first permanent library.
