San Jose fruit picking is a fun activity with kids and the whole family before summer ends. The entire region and nearby areas have a wealth of delicious fresh fruits and vegetables for you to enjoy. There are some great local farms within and around San Jose where owners allow fruit picking. Some U-Pick farms in San Jose also offer tours so you can experience life on the farm, see the sheds where they sell their own fresh produce, and, in some cases, get up close and personal with the animals through onsite petting farms.

You can go at any time of the year, depending on what fruit you are interested in. It’s loads of fun out in the fresh air and gives the kids a bit more of an insight into where their food comes from.

But before heading to these U-Pick farms in San Jose, call ahead to ensure a good supply of fresh produce and check if reservations are required. Oh, and don’t forget your baskets!

Berry Island U-pick farm is well-known throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. They grow the sweetest, best-tasting organic strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, boysenberries, olallieberries, and fresh specialty produce. Their picking season starts in April to November and is open every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm and Sunday from 9 am to noon. No reservations are needed. First come, first serve only!

They only accept cash, and closed-toe shoes are required. No pets allowed!

Gilroy Upick

This small family-operated U-pick-only local farm in beautiful Gilroy sells freshly picked fruits and vegetables. They are proud of the fact that they do not use any spray of any kind, organic or inorganic, to grow their crops. They grow crops such as cherries, strawberries, blackberries, plums/pluots, Watermelons, Cantaloupes, Corn, and string beans. Every year, Gilroy Upick kicks off the San Jose county cherry season with its early ripening varieties starting in early May, around 25 days ahead of bing cherries.

Visitors cannot climb ladders, trees, tractors, or other farm implements. No pets are allowed in the orchard. Please check their website for current availability and hours before coming.

Lazy K Ranch and Cherry Farm

Here at the Lazy K Ranch, they have over 1000 cherry trees, including bings, brooks, and vans (dark red sweet cherries), all organic use approved sprays only, for your picking enjoyment. Bring your whole family and pick your own beautiful, juicy, ripe cherries. Kids can easily reach low trees. They will also enjoy the ranch grounds and see their horses and goats too!

This local farm near San Jose has plenty of lawn area for you to enjoy a picnic and plenty of room to play. Check their website first for unexpected closures or changes of hours before coming.

It is one of the U-Pick farms in San Jose that grows organic berries, vegetables, and flowers. Tru2Earth is passionate about providing fresh seasonal produce with exceptional flavors and sharing the experience of visiting a farm. Entry to the farm is free but requires you to buy at least $5 worth of products during your farm visit. Make sure to complete the liability release waiver form before entering the U-Pick area.

Kindly supervise kids and make sure they don’t pull/damage the plants and produce. Pets are not allowed in the picking area.

Bring your family and friends and spend the day in the orchard fruit picking with kids from bings, rainiers, and coral cherries. There’s no need for a reservation, but check their website first for schedule and operating hours before coming. Entrance and parking are free! Prices may vary weekly depending on market conditions. They have multiple locations in Gilroy and Morgan Hill.

Please note that ladders or tools to elevate a person are not permitted in the orchard—no climbing in the trees, on buckets, or pulling down branches. Pets are not allowed.

Lucky You Orchards is run by the Chinchiolo Family, a 4th generation organic farm specializing in organic apples, cherries, plums, and pluots. For Bay Area residents, Lucky You Orchards has become a go to spot for an apple harvest experience. Friends and family alike visit the orchards. Their goal is to ensure they get a real-life harvest experience and walk away with the season’s bounty.

Its working California farm (Ripon, to be exact) gives guests a peek into the authentic life as a farmer, a great education tool for parents, and a quality spot to stock up on grandma’s favorite apple pie. Guests of all ages can enjoy a FREE scenic tractor ride and fresh-picked organic apples for just $2.99/lb.

Bacchini’s Fruit Tree

Bacchini’s Fruit Tree is a family-operated Picked and U-Pick fruit stand. Each year, they are open during May and June to offer fresh fruits grown in their orchard. All U-Pick will be done by reservation to control the population inside the orchard. As you enter, you may purchase one or more various-sized boxes for picking and taking home (small, medium, large). Each box is priced by the amount the container will hold. You may purchase additional boxes as you may need them.

It is not uncommon for it to be closed on a Monday or Tuesday following a busy/crowded picking weekend since more fruit needs to ripen before reopening. Check their website for live updates!

Blue House Farm

Blue House Farm is one of the U-Pick farms near San Jose that grows various certified organic vegetables, fruits, and cut flowers year-round. In their seasoned years of growing, they can supply farmers’ markets, their farmstand, and wholesale accounts with the highest-quality produce available. While they grow diverse fresh produce and cut flowers, they operate a strawberry U-pick only.

No reservations are necessary, and no fees are associated with a visit to the farm. You may visit their website for opening dates and hours.

Clearview Organic Orchards

Clearview Orchards produces the finest CCOF-certified organic apples. Whether you want to pick your own apples or pick up some organic fruit from the Apple Barn to take home, their orchards are the place to create lifelong memories with the whole family. In addition to apples, Clearview Orchards sells fresh apple juice, delicious apple turnovers, organic squash, pumpkins, dried lavender, honey, and more!

Crystal Bay Farm

This local organic farm is located just around the corner from scenic Sunset State Beach. Head to Crystal Bay Farm for sweet strawberries in the spring and raspberries in June or July. Veggie U-pick is also available, including lettuce, radish, chard, kale, tomatoes, beans, beets, carrots, garlic, herbs, and more! There is a $2/person entrance fee.

They will not be hosting picnics in the area during this time, but everyone is welcome to visit the farm and visit the animals. Check the website for select opening dates.

Experience the most fun part of growing fruits here at the Ranch! Spend a day with your family at this local farm near San Jose and breathe in the fresh air and countryside atmosphere. With apple orchards and berry fields, you can enjoy learning about your food and the fruits of your labor (literally!). Pick your favorite fruit of the season right off the tree or vine, then picnic among the apple trees and the hills and let the kids play.

Pease Ranch

Pease Ranch is exclusively a u-pick farm that offers blackberries, loganberries, boysenberries, and olallieberries. You may even see some chickens or a tortoise roaming the grounds. Bring cash, as they don’t accept credit cards.

Fresh fruit ripens every day and cannot control nature, so they will open when they have ripe fruit, and each day, they will close when the ripe fruit has been picked out. It is always best to call first or check their website for operating hours.

Note: They are closed for the 2023 U-pick season.

Skyline Chestnut Orchard

Skyline Chestnuts opens to the public when the ripe chestnuts fall from the trees, typically in early October. The season lasts from 5 to 6 weeks. Usually, the crop is at its peak, and the chestnuts are easiest to gather around the third weekend of the harvest. When the chestnuts have all been gathered, they close in mid to late November.

The orchard is open for fruit picking from Wednesday through Sunday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. It’s best to arrive earlier in the day. The orchard can get picked over by late afternoon, especially on Sundays. You can find more specific dates just before they open each year by checking their website.

Swanton Berry Farm

Typically, between May and September, you can pick the organic strawberries every Saturday and Sunday through the summer from 10 am to 5 pm. Depending on the season, you might also get to choose your juicy Olallieberries or try some of the farm’s other unique fruits, such as Tayberries and Loganberries. Combining organic farming practices with union labor is why Swanton Berry Farm produces fruits, jams, and baked goods beyond comparison.

Get the provided U-Pick boxes from inside the farmstand and walk down the dirt road out front (marked by U-Pick signs), which leads to the strawberry fields. Please adhere to any ‘NO PICKING HERE’ signs and pick only RED, FULLY RIPE strawberries. Return to the farmstand to weigh and pay.

Webb Ranch

Silicon Valley’s heart lies a beautiful oasis for horses and organic farming. Webb Ranch features CCOF fresh produce grown on their ranch and U-Pick farms in San Jose. The U-Pick season usually runs from June through July or August, depending on the rain and weather. Familiarize yourself with the specific berry you are picking, as each has a unique flavor and appearance. If you arrive early, it will give you a more abundant selection. They also offer horse lessons, boarding, camps, and much more.

No reservations are needed, and there’s no time limit on picking (but they close at 1 pm). Visit their website for opening hours and dates.
